Day 8 - Sleep

So, Good news is; I managed to get up on time yesterday and catch my nap and get up again. Bad news is; I think I am going to have to quit...
Between the physical activity and the time i have left, I dont think I can manage. However, I did learn how much I love to sleep
I have learned:
How to quickly get to sleep
How to Easily wake up, no matter what
How to play bass guitar
That you Can have too much time
That I enjoy sleeping
That dreams can be strange
Now I leave it to Gray. I cant wait to see how his turns out.
SET YOUR ALARMS!
Thats really the best advice.

Stryker's Everyman - FTS Day 1 :(

So, i haven't updated in a few days. Thats basically because I have been epically failing since my first oversleep. x.x
Two and three nights ago, I simply fell back over onto my bed and fell asleep. Last night, my alarm didn't go off. This night, I arose! Unfortunately, it seems I may have reset my progress a little. Well, okay, alot. But its only Tuesday, and i have til Saturday until i have to work.
Also started learning to play bass. which is making my fingers really sore. I can already play two metallica song, jet, and motley crew.
I am getting hungry now... oh well. Anyway, I am seriously trying to push through this. I would really like to get back into this routine before getting back to work.

Stryker's Everyman - Day 2

So, it has defiantly been interesting. Yesterday I didn't post because I was generally busy all day, but it went well. I got all my naps on time, and was able to wake up from my core sleep semi-easily. However, this morning, my core sleep got extended by 6 hours because I set my alarms wrong.
Its only a minor step back. While it is annoying, it was bound to happen sooner or later. So, to remedy this, I will skip all of todays naps and just do a core again. I hope it doesn't reset my progress.
It feels great to be on the everyman. (Not talking about today) I had more energy, more concentration, and an easier time getting to sleep for my naps. It should be a bit easier, but i was rushed to get to sleep last night, so I guess I screwed that up.

An Informative Email Conversation

I got this
interesting e-mail from a former Polyphasic Sleep Group moderator
and current contributor to the polyphasicsleep.info Wiki.

http://polyphasicsleep.info/index.php?title=Dymaxion

The problem is: what was that schedule? If you re-read the article
carefully, you'll discover: nobody really knows, there are just a lot of
claims and interpretations. Dymaxion (Time magazine's name for the
schedule, not Fuller's) is defined to be equitetraphasic. In fact Fuller
might have managed something like Uberman first, then found that he could
do something like (what's now called) Dymaxion, provided he also got in a
few other naps. Well, that's looking a lot more like free-running sleep,
to me.

In the one anecdotal report of success with any credibility, on the Google
Group, the guy repoting it had done Uberman for a good while (6 months or
more) before transitioning successfully (he said) to Dymaxion.

As for the safety risks, *nobody* , Actually understands the long-term safety risks. That's a big
part of the problem. The short-term safety risks should be obvious:
sleepiness is a major underlying factor in accidental injury and death.
Why take that risk, for a schedule that nobody (not even Fuller) was able
to prove workable? For the challenge? Uberman is a huge challenge.

From every end, there is a beginning

So, Yesterday was interesting...
and by yesterday, I mean since Monday, because that what it felt like.
Last night unfortunately I fell asleep. Twice. after my 12:30 nap, and after my 6:30 nap. This was largely because of the fact that i was bored, and had nothing to do, and no one to talk to. I should have known that it would be hard. Since my general discussion with the public, and people who actually know what they are talking to gave me alot of... constructive criticism. I don't think this could be done. Special Thanks to Michael Turner who gave me some facts and actually pointed out that the Dymaxion Sleep Schedule doesn't really exist. X.X (well, it does just not the way most think)
However, this doesn't mean I am just going to stop polysphasic sleeping, I am going to switch to an Everyman.
For the following reason
- I don't have the time to set aside for the extra naps.
- I can simply add on two and half hours to my 12:30 am nap

Which bring me to another point. I should have seen its impassibility this because you see that the everyman is hard to adapt to, so, if you cut more time off its just insane. I also found that the time in between naps is too long... Which makes me believe that the uberman is doable, but just barely. I do think that trying this was helpful

- The transition to the everyman will be easier
- I am used to taking nap, and having the small amount of sleep for the last three days will make 4 hours seem like heaven :)
- I learned how nice it was to take naps
- I had too much time on my hands, defiantly unneeded.
- I am used to the strictness of the Dymaxion, so the flexibility of the Everyman will help alot

I think I am ready to take on the Every man. My Core sleep will be from 12:30 to 3:30, with naps at 6:30 12:30 and 6:30. I skipped my 6:30 nap tonight to help with getting to sleep for my core. It is fun, and I think I will be able to survive. :) Especially because those were tough hours, and now I will be asleep for them. So, I will start from day one tonight, for my everyman.

Dymaxion Sleep - Day 2.5

Holy...
It has defiantly been hard. Especially a few hours after Gray's last post.
I was at the point where I was playing fallout and I couldn't concentrate. I would play for a while, then lose focus, and space out into a day dream, then snap back into it. It was annoying. The only way I snapped out of it was when Smoke came over to grab some stuff from the night before, I helped do some cleaning. During the night it is very hard, during the day it can be tough too.
I figured out the way I get to sleep. Part of the adaptation is that your brain adapts to instantly falling into REM sleep. Part of this is actually a learning process. I find that the more I sleep, the more I learn the things that I have to adjust to, so I can really quickly get into a comfy position.
I also get alot more practice at this then the normal person. The normal person goes to sleep once a day, I go to sleep 4 times.
I have also yet to oversleep, which I am quite proud of. One small problem that I had was that my 12:30pm nap was pushed back 10 minutes because I was in the car going to my friends house after the party :(
So far it really hasn't had any negative affects, i didn't have any trouble with my 6:30 nap.
My eating schedule is kinda strange too.
I cant really tell whether I am really hungry usually, and I know its harder to get to sleep if your stomach is digesting something. I want to stick with foods that digest the fastest and eat them right after a nap. Things like Starchs and fruits and vegetables.
It is tough so far, but I am glad that I was with my friends, they helped me though. If I make it though, I thank them.
It will be a rough night. Will update soon[er or later]

Stryker and Gray (t-7d9h)

Stryker is here and he just woke up from a nap. He's eating cereal and playing Fallout 3. It's 1:15 AM.

I'm still awake and I was awake through his nap from 12:30 'til 1:00, since I'm not on my schedule yet.

-----

It's now quarter to 3. We escaped the Vault as a baby. It's glitchy but it works.

Stryker seems alright, maybe a little giggly-energetically-overtired, but he's not showing much, so that's good. He seems to find it easier with myself and Valkrye to stay awake.

He'll report in the morning when he has time. Morning has no meaning for him anymore.

That's all for tonight.

Dymaxion Sleep - Day 1.5

So, I just finished my fifth nap and I having a bit of a difficulty concentrating.
The days are easier, I have people that distract me.
I have been eating a few small meals throughout the day so they are easy to digest, and overall it seems like I am adapting pretty well.
But its onle the first day.If feels like I should be able to do this. It really does.
I Love the free time, and I look foreward to my naps, because the moment I lay down, its just THUD. Then I am out.
I have been spaced out a little all day, but I have been doing some little reaction tests and I seem to be generally on par. As for feeling, I am still cold [er then anyone else in the house]
I have the zoned out feeling constantly.
Ooh food!
Be back in a sec
Mmmm food in my stomach feels nice.
Bu tyes, still much coldness. I didn't really accomplish much today. Unless you count playing Fable 2 or Tiger woods 2010 an acomplishment. I think it would be nice to find something to accomplish.
I am going to a party tonight. Its going to be interesting because Gray is ht ehost, os he will understand why I will sneak off at 12:30. Just close friends. So, now we come to one of my big rules with this; No Alcohol XD
It may be obvious, but it would be impossibel to wake up correctly and all that jazz. Needless to say, it will be interesting being sober at the party. I think I will have to lay off the dark pop too, just because of the caffiene. So, I will probably stick to Sprite or 7up or whatever.
I will update probably a little while after my next nap.

Dymaxion Sleep - Night 1.5

Okay, So, I generally feel like junk.
haha. Go figure. My motor skills are a touch off. I had to type in my password a few times just to get it right. And typing kinda sucks too.
Things kinda went down hill since my last post. I got cold, annoyingly so. I am okay now. A little pukey (yeah, I know, gross.) but I think that's what I get for eating KFC before bed. and tired of course. Though, I feel a tiny bit better now that I had a nap. I am actually very hungry. I think I am going to need to incorporate a snack. (Not greasy though)
On the plus side, I have yet to oversleep. I actually fell asleep on my last nap, and I actually am not too bad. Really want to get some food into me. Defiantly a bit of trouble concentrating.
A few problems I have run into:
for 3 of my 4 naps, it is light out. I should try to find a way to fix that.
When I actually go for a nap, it seems like every little thing bothers me, because I know I have to fall asleep fast. Fold is the blanket, tiny itches, the way my heads positioned. I wonder what I can do about that...
I decided to go back through all the Top 100 charts of the last 8 years and download any music I miss. I didn't get nearly as much as I would like, but its a start. I would like to increase my musical collection during this time. I ended up tidying up my room a bit. It was tough just because I have to be quiet so I don't wake anyone else in the house.
I think I may actually be able to pull this off if I stay away from greasy food.
So far I have not had to use any of my secondary timers. My phone wakes me up, so my computer alarm and alarm clock haven't gone off yet, but I will continue to set them just in case.
Anyway, that's my update. I will probably do 2 or 3 a day for you guys.
(Funny, Gray starts the same day I go back to work ^^)

A word on the Everyman (t-9d)

To follow Stryker's example, I'll begin by telling the details of my new sleeping schedule and then my own personal statistics.

I will be doing the Everyman sleep schedule.

Unlike Stryker, I will be using a "core nap". It essentially simulates the long sleep of a monophasic sleep pattern, and gets rid of the feeling of days blending together from the Uberman and Dymaxion.

It acts as the period that ends the day. Stryker will not have that period. We'll explore the results of that together as we progress.

The Everyman consists of a core nap, and a number of smaller naps throughout the day as a factor of that core nap. The guideline is three-and-three. Three hours core, three naps. And every hour you add/subtract you subtract/add a nap.

The positives of the Everyman over the other methods is that it is much more flexible, which is good for keeping up a social life. But it is unfortunately much harder to acclimate yourself to, so it may take longer for me to be back in working order.

Other information

I will be sleeping from 11:30 'til 2:30 for my core sleep, and then three twenty minute naps throughout the day. The first will be from 6:40 until 7:00, and the others are still being established. I need to find a convenient time, but I figure the other two will be around noon and 7:00.

I'm 17 years myself, and I'll be taking time off from work as well. Unfortunately I won't be able to start until the first of the month, as I've already taken time off for my graduation and prom.
To copy Stryker's format:
I don't take any medication.
I do wear specs, but only to see far away. I'm not as blind as he is :D.
I've typically slept 6-7 hours a night. But I'll be sleeping more leading up to the change.
I'm physically fit, because of a fast metabolism, but I don't work out or exercise as much a sI should. That will be changing.
I'm going to try to use Placebo's sleep track as an alarm to prevent myself from waking others in the house, but I'll set some extra to catch myself at first. I will also be using Placebo's track to time out my naps.

End notes

I'm going to be getting a journal of sorts and reporting in it on my sleep. Every time I attempt to sleep/wake up, whether it was by alarm or naturally, how I feel upon waking. I will be doing this as my primary activity upon awakening. I'll also try to jot notes throughout the day if anything significant comes up. The most significant data I will be posting here, and later on possibly scans of the book itself. We'll see how that goes.

I won't be updating frequently until I start, unless it's to comment on Stryker's posts, and I welcome him to comment on mine as well.

Sleep well.

Dymaxion Sleep - Night 1

Hello hello to all!
So, its my first night, and it has been going well, as it should be. Its basically an all nighter with a nap. This is because I am still riding off the large amount of sleep that I got yesterday.
It kinda feels like a false sense of security.
I lost 3 minutes on my 12:30am nap. two because of a computer malfunction, and I had to get it restated to set the alarm, and I woke up a minute early.
Well, I guess I shouldn't say woke up.
I have taken two naps today, I took my 6:30 pm one so that I would have energy for this evening. Neither I have actually fallen asleep. Rested, sure, but not actually sleep. This Kind of worries me, but I know that I will fall asleep sooner or later during my naps. :)
Also, That cold thing is affecting me too. However, this seems much easier to do with lights on. I find that all nighters that are pulled where you have to keep the lights off are harder in the ones where you can keep them on.
So, I have sucessfully organized my book marks and played a few hours of Warcraft III. I think now I will work on my language some. Things to do at night is defiantly a big danger. It would probably kill me if I had nothing to do.
So far everything is running on course, no oversleeping or forgetting alarm settings. My glasses are dirty tho... one sec...
Ah, much better.
I can almost feel the sleep deprivation sneaking up on me. Haha. But for now I am fairly alert and happy.
That is my update for the night. If anyone has any suggestions for stuff to put in my next posts, or just wants to say hi, gimme an email.

Dymaxoin Sleep - Day -1

So, One of my last days of full sleep.I figure I should give you guys some starting statistics.
I am currently 16 years old
I have taken Two weeks off of work to set aside for the adaption
School is out for the summer
I wear contacts during the day and glasses at night.
Currently taking 1 - 2 allergy pills in the evening.
I am in perfect health
I have been sleeping around eight to ten hours since school got out.
I am an excessively active person. Usually 4 to 5 times per week
There are somethings that need to be addressed.
I have done some researching.
I think I will have to lay off the intense physical activity for the first week, but we will see.
I know from previous experience with all nighters, that when you stay up like this your body temperature. I have learned that this is due to the fact that you are moving as much, you dont have as much food in your system to burn, and your metabolism actually slows down. (Hence why you are not supposed to eat before bed ^^)
I plan to have three alarms. The first being on my cell phone, at exactly half an hour. This is so that if I am out, I will be able to wake up with it. The second will be set 5 minutes after, in case I sleep through my cell. It will be an alarm on my computer to play slipknot. The third will be my alarm clock. It will be set ten minutes after.
A few little things a have found are:
Dawn Simulations; which is an alarm that brightens the room
and Caffeine Naps: Taking a nap directly after ingesting caffeine. The caffeine takes affect 20 - 30 minutes after, just when i should be waking up anyway.I may experiment with it, but i do want to wait until after I am adapted.
The other thing is naps :( I dont want to take them, but from what I have read, It is easier to take an extra nap every few days to ease into it.
Also, I have read that after becoming adapted, you can move your naps by +/- 30 mins. This would be very helpful for work.
All in all, I am very excited to try this. I am a little scared, to be honest. I have read alot of failures, but i do want to make the best attempt possible, and push myself. I know that I can attain this goal, as long as I try.

Dymaxion Sleep - Day: -2

Dymaxion Sleep:
Dymaxion sleeep is the process of sleeping for half an hour every six hours.
This provides enough sleep to run through an entire day, and is similer to the Uberman sleep schedule.
It works with the basics of you sleep for half an hour, feel refreashed, but you wear down quickly, and by that time you have to nap again anyway.
With monophasic Sleep, you sleep for 8 hours, then push your body for 16 hours straight.
I have done some research on this schedule. I have found a few blogs and news stories.
Longest time doing this schedule is two years, by its creator.
Unfortunatly I see alot of people quitting the sleep schedule because they have places to be at the times when they take naps.
If it was easy, everyone would do it.
I have prepared a list of things that i am going to be learning, and I will update thos on route.
They include:
Esperanto
Contact Juggling
Stumble-Upon
Working out
And some other things.
I am quite excited to get it underway. I know it will take alot of will, and I hope that I am able to conquer this obstacle.
As a side note; I decided to take two weeks off of work so that I can adapt to this before going back. I have arranged so that I can take my half an hour break when it is needed and that I can get off work and get home in time to get my other naps.
As to define some terms:
My naps will be at 12:30 and 6:30, both am and pm
12:30 am until 12:30 pm Will be morning, and the oppisite will be evening.
I cant wait to start, I look foreward to keeping you guys updated on my progress.

A prologue to our little story...

So, It is currently 2:09 in the morning and i thought it would be best to have a small post about how this blog will work
Gray Shine, and Myself are going to undertake the task of Polyphasic Sleep.
We will be writing our epic adventures here.
For those of you who don't know, Polyphasic Sleep is when someone sleep more then once a day to make up for sleeping less during the night. I believe that in Mexico there is actually a law for naptime. That would be awesome!
This is because during seista {i dont think i have the correct letters for that}People there will sleep six hours during the night instead of the regular eight, but they willl take a nap in between to replenish their energy.
So, this is the introductery Post, i am going to post seperatly what I am doing and who I am, and I will get Gray to do the same.
Peace
Stryker McClain
